Earlier this year, Southern Cooking Queen Paula Deen revealed she has Type 2 Diabetes.
Known for her excessive use of butter and disregard for calories, Paula Deen became famous for her Southern style comfort food recipes on TV. Deen has been receiving bad reviews for the health of her cooking for years, but has chosen to ignore the critics, continuing to cook and eat in the same way. Unfortunately, this has led to her type 2 diabetes. Now, the cooking queen is stuck eating her words. How would you think this announcement will effect Paula Deen's image in the cooking world? Do you think she will change the way she cooks and reinvent her image as a successful cook living with Diabetes? Do you think Paula will continue cooking the same way she does, giving recipes to an already obese USA, which can lead to diabetes?
Although sad, it sounds like she completely disregarded her own health, making it her fault. I try to sympathize, but have a hard time doing so. From what it sounds like her southern style cooking is her trademark and by changing her image it changes the whole reason for why she became famous. I'm sure her 'people' will try and make her change her image, but I don't think it will be nearly as effective as her original one.
ReplyDeleteI think the food network that she is on has a decision to make. She is unique in a way in which she does not care about the health of her food and that is what makes her entertaining to watch. The network should keep her doing what she does even though she ha been diagnosed with diabetes. The show won't work as well if she starts cooking healthy.
ReplyDeleteMaybe Paula Dean can use this sickness and try to transform her once unhealthy cooking, to a healthier yet still delicious way of cooking. I'm sure there are many out there that have enjoyed the same kind of food that Paula cooks, and had have similar struggles or diagnosis as Paula. Why not try to capture the hearts of these people and turn this negative into a positive?
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of Paula but she sounds like a pretty big star that just received a lot more media for the wrong reason. It will be pretty hard to change her cooking to healthy foods because her whole idea is cooking with anything you like because its taste what counts. A majority of her followers are probably unhealthy eaters and its hard to change people's lifestyles. Hopefully this is a big eye opener to her viewers and Paula does take on a responsible approach to her show if she continues. I think the question is does she want to be successful and continue her regular ways, or lose a few customers and re structure how she runs her show.
