Recently, Honda has launched a new campaign which plays off the new popularity of lists of goals. They created a "Leap List". It is very similar to a Bucket List, but instead of having a morbid end such as death, it is a list to be completed before you make the next big leap in life (like getting married, buying a house, having kids....). They use this campaign to market their Honda CR-V, an SUV small enough to be for a couple but still large enough to get the job done. It is a "cross-over" type of car which is reflected in their campaign. A cross-over in life is a kind of transition, and their campaign reflects this by encouraging consumers to have this car before they are done transitioning into a new phase of their lives.
The website for this campaign is also made to draw the consumer in. Its catchy design and interactive layout guide visitors to create a leap list of their own and enter a contest to win a Honda CR-V of their own!

I think this is a great idea. It gets young people hooked because we are a generation that is told from a very young age to make goals for ourselves and keep track of our progress. I think it's a commercial that a lot of us can really relate to. For example, for my business capstone class I read a book titled "Life After College" by Jenny Blake. It is a good read for people that want some simple advice for their early twenties, yet it inspired me to create two lists: a bucket list for before I turn 25 and a general bucket list. Yet I think the beauty in these goals lies in the fact that I'm not holding myself to them. I certainly know that these are goals I want to achieve, but if something is accomplished at 27 instead of 25, I'm okay with that. I think the important thing is to recognize that unexpected situations will always arise, and the key is to still remember those goals and make them happen. This idea is shown in the commercial as well. Both spontaneity and thinking ahead can dwell together.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of the idea as well because bucket list is a very somber topic and the overall picture of it and making a list for events that you look forward to is much more intriguing. I hate to look back and regret things I didn't do because I was too lazy or just didn't think about it. Making a list to get motivated is definitely a tool I use daily and having this idea for things to do before big life occasions can be just as useful. Go skydiving before turning 25 is on the list!
