Room for Improvement

"What's so special about marketing?" Is a question I have been asked from time to time, "All you do is think of commercials...".  However, marketing is much more than a bunch of educated dreamers trying to come up with the Academy Award of Super Bowl breaks.  Marketing is the process of managing relationships between producers and consumers.  Beginning at the turn of the century, after the major Industrial Revolution, competition between products began to grow at an unprecedented rate like never before.  The ability to mass produce brought choices to Americans at lower prices than ever.  Inventions such as the railroad, telegraph and radio brought information of products to far stretches of the country and created new chances for the creation of target markets.  Starting with print ads in newspapers and on storefronts, Advertisement has come a long way.  New media, technology and cultural changes have been constantly carrying marketing into the future, becoming an indispensable part of the current economy.  Today, marketing and advertisement is a billion dollar industry.  Obviously companies have come a long way with their marketing, using it to propel their business forward.  However, some of the world's most powerful companies have had their challenges along the way.  Apple computer is known for their catchy tunes and florissant silhouettes, smarmy mac men and PC nerds as well as exceptional products sweeping the market.  From the iPod to the iPad Apple continues to sweep the competition and provide customers with satisfaction, proving that Apple has come a long way in the past 30 years... Take a look!

Which one makes the greatest impression on you?

  1. I really like how many videos you presented. I had watched the 1984 commercial in my introduction to marketing class, and it left the biggest impression on me because it was so revolutionary for the time (both the product and the way they marketed it). It is so different from how they want to be viewed today. Neither ad is better or worse per say, but throughout the years their ads leave the viewer with a very different feeling. The 1984 ad is all about empowerment and being a part of a new technological era; it's very innovative. Yet the more recent ads are showing a very modern trend. The message is that the average person is busy and needs certain resources to help them stay on top of their work. Yet it also depicts these people as being fun and creative; people that others enjoy being around. Overall, I think that Apple has made wise choices concerning how they want to market their products to consumers.

  2. I think Apple has done such a great job in marketing its new products to Everyone, including children (a new way of learning), teenagers, and also the elderly. I saw the same 1984 commercial in one of my classes as well and it is remarkable how much their ads have evolved since then. I do however feel like their same motive of innovation is still there in Apple's recent ads.
In the "Jet Ipod Commercial," I think its brilliant how the actors dancing with their Ipods are darkened out in front of a vibrant color background, leaving the product (Ipod and headphones) very visible and white, bringing the viewers attention to the product itself. This three color scheme is refreshing and affective. This gives me the impression that they are saying, "Anyone can use the ipod but your individuality and your unique expressions when using the ipod is what will single you out in the world when buying this product. Great blog topic Christina and great insight Christine.
